Mart Poom has been declared fit for Estonia’s World Cup qualifiers next month - boosting his chances of playing a part in Sunderland’s top-flight campaign next season.
The 33-year-old goalkeeper has been out of action since October with a knee problem but has been given the all-clear to link up with his national squad for the games against Liechtenstein and Portugal on June 4 and 8.
Poom managed just 12 games for manager Mick McCarthy last season and had two operations in a bid to clear up the problem which saw Norway stopper Thomas Myhre establish himself as number one at the Stadium of Light.
Myhre is out of contract but is determined to win a new deal, which could leave the two experienced keepers fighting for the shirt with youngster Ben Alnwick.
Alnwick played the last three games of the season and helped the Black Cats clinch the Coca-Cola Championship title with the Scandinavian ruled out by a side strain.
