Melbourne GP moved back

Australia will host the second round of next year’s Formula One world championship, according to race organisers.

Melbourne’s Albert Park staged the first race of this year, but has lost pole position for 2008 to Bahrain.

However, to accommodate television viewers across Europe, the March 16 event will start 90 minutes later than normal at 3.30pm local time.

It had been suggested the Australian Grand prix could become a night race for next year, but it will continue to run in daylight.

“Taking all factors into account, this is the best option for our event and the people who support it,” said Ron Walker, chairman of the Australian Grand Prix Corporation.

“Our investigations (into a night race) have convinced us that as things currently stand, the disadvantages outweigh the advantages.

“Going later (race start time) will benefit fans at Albert Park, who will enjoy an even bigger day of entertainment, and people watching the race live in other parts of the world – especially Europe, where fans will be able to get up closer to breakfast time.”
