A yachtsman was rescued today after getting into difficulties off the coast of Co Cork, while the Coast Guard was also called into action to deal with fuel slick after two trawlers were found sunk in Howth Harbour.
The Courtmacsherry RNLI lifeboat was called out at 3.45pm this afternoon to go to the aid of the 30ft boat which had developed steering problems off the Old Head of Kinsale, near Courtmacsherry Bay.
The lifeboat towed the single-sailor yacht, which had been travelling from Crosshaven to west Cork, to the pier in Courtmacsherry.
Meanwhile in Dublin, part of Howth Harbour remained closed off this evening as officials continued efforts to clear up an oil and diesel slick released after two 30ft trawlers were discovered this morning sunk at their berths on the harbour wall.
Coast Guard officials launched an operation to contain any pollution risk following the discovery, using booms, pollution blankets and other methods to remove the fuel from the surface of the sea.
Officials said the efforts, helped by favourable weather conditions, had succeeded in keeping the pollution threat confined to a section of the harbour.
No indication was given as to how the trawlers sank.
