The Department of Education has come in for intense criticism at a public meeting in Cork over its attitude to providing education for autistic children.

The meeting organised by Irish Autism Action heard last night that the money spent by the State on the recent O'Cuanachain case could provide specialised education for hundreds of children.

The case was taken by the O'Cuanachain family in an effort to get the State to fund an expensive form of one-on-one education for their autistic child.

Irish Autism Action says millions of euros that could be funding such education is being spent on fighting parents who want their children to avail of the Applied Behavioural Analysis.
