Gerrard red stuns Anfield

Liverpool midfielder Steven Gerrard was sent off less than a minute after his half-time introduction against Manchester United at Anfield on Sunday.

The former England captain, who will end his long association with the Reds this summer when he moves to Los Angeles Galaxy, had just come on as a substitute when he appeared to stamp on United midfielder Ander Herrera.

Referee Martin Atkinson barely hesitated as he brandished the red card in the direction of Gerrard.

Manchester United could have been reduced to 10 men shortly after Gerrard's dismissal when defender Phil Jones was high and late in a tackle on Jordan Henderson, but Atkinson opted just to show the yellow card.

United record signing Angel di Maria, only just back in the side after serving a suspension following his FA Cup red card against Arsenal, then also escaped punishment when he caught the ball to take a throw-in when it was still in play.

Robbie Savage reacted to Gerrard's dismissal on Twitter, saying: ``Cannot believe what I've seen there from gerrard , frustration, stupidity.''
