Alternative energy supply strategy needed for Bord Na Móna, says Fianna Fáil TD
A clear strategy outlining an alternative energy supply needs to be drawn up.
That is according to Fianna Fáil TD Robert Troy who has said yesterday's decision to overturn planning permission for Bord na Móna's plant in Offaly has put jobs in the Midlands area in jeopardy.
The ruling follows An Taisce's challenge against An Bord Pleanála's decision in 2013 to allow the plant to continue operating beyond the end of this year.
A stay has been put on the order which will keep the premises open until the end of next April.
But Robert Troy has said that if the peat briquette is to bite the dust there needs to be an alternative.
“Peat extraction is not going to last indefinitely, we need to see a clear comprehensive strategy by the Government, by the board and CEO of Bord Na Mona which will use alternative energy supplies, so that in the long term the future viability and sustainability of the jobs in Bord Na Mona across the Midland region is retained,” Mr Troy said.
