Ousted Philippines president Joseph Estrada was arrested today for alleged corruption in office.

After weeks of legal wrangling and a last-minute flurry of moves aimed at keeping him out of jail, Estrada was escorted from his home in Manila’s Greenhills district.

It came amid a tense stand-off between thousands of his backers and riot police that seemed on the verge of erupting into violence.
