Julia Roberts says being happy is the key to looking good.

The 44-year-old actress believes being content in your life improves how you look and self-confidence is hugely important.

She said: "I honestly think the key to anyone looking beautiful is being happy in their life. That's really the biggest part of what anybody looks like because, whether you mean to or not, you wear your life on your face and in your posture and in your attitude.

"So that is the number one key to coming across as a beautiful individual."

The 'Pretty Woman' actress - who has three children with husband Danny Moder - also revealed how eating healthily and exercising regularly is important.

She told Britain's Hello! magazine: "I do try to eat well and have a balanced amount of the good stuff. I guess it's about water and things that are green. My girlfriend advised trying a gluten-free diet as an experiment.

"She said, 'If I go through your pantry and replace everything that you have with a gluten-free version, will you just try it?' And I said yes. Now I feel good - I'm getting there!"
