The emperor of Japan is to undergo medical tests following the discovery of a heart problem, officials said today.

Emperor Akihito, 77, will have thorough tests at a Tokyo hospital on Friday after the problem was detected in check-ups last month, the Imperial Household Agency said.

Until then, he will continue his duties, it added.

The emperor underwent an operation for prostate cancer in 2003 and has been undergoing hormonal therapy to prevent its recurrence.

He has cut back on official duties because of health reasons and did not make any foreign trips last year.
