A man was shot by police following an incident in a Northern Ireland housing estate tonight.

He suffered a bullet wound to his leg during the shooting at Ballysally in Coleraine, Co Derry.

A Police Service of Northern Ireland spokesman said the victim’s condition was not known.

But he added: “At this stage his injuries are not thought to be life threatening.”

The shooting came amid reports of a man brandishing a pellet gun in the area.

It is understood tensions have been high in Ballysally following a vicious fight between two men last month.

A report on tonight’s shooting was expected to be compiled for the Northern Ireland Police Ombudsman, Nuala O’Loan.
