Alcohol, petrol, diesel and tobacco have escaped tax increases in the budget - a move which has been criticised by health groups.

Alcohol, petrol, diesel and tobacco have escaped tax increases in the budget - a move which has been criticised by health groups.

Professor Luke Clancy of ASH Ireland said he was bitterly disappointed cigarettes had escaped a price increase.

“The people who suffer most from tobacco are the poor so any method that doesn't encourage people to stop smoking is socially divisive and is harmful and will increase the inequalities in society,” he said.
