Sinn Féin hoping to annul bin charges law in Seanad

Sinn Féin says it will bring a motion to the Seanad on Wednesday, which it hopes will annul the legislation for the new pay-by-weight bin charges.

The Upper House has the power to annul a ministerial order voted in by the Dail within 21 sitting days.

Sinn Féin TD Mary Lou McDonald, says there is still time for the Seanad to do this, if a majority of Senators vote to support it.

She said: "The Seanad is the body with the legal authority to annul the legislation, so the ball is very much at the foot of each and every senator.

"The Sinn Féin senators have brought forward this motion. I really hope that Fianna Fáil, that Government senators, that Independents will back our motion because I am sure they, like the rest of us, have been inundated by families."
