A woman has died in Britain after falling from a third-floor balcony in a Primark store.
Officers were called to the clothes shop in Church Street, Liverpool, by paramedics at 6pm yesterday.
The 57-year-old woman was found at the bottom of the escalators on the ground floor.
Moments earlier, she had been seen on a balcony next to the escalators on the third floor, police said.
A male doctor who was in the area at the time treated the woman at the scene before paramedics arrived.
She was taken to the Royal University Liverpool Hospital in a critical condition but was pronounced dead a short time later.
A police spokesman said: “Merseyside Police can confirm that an investigation is under way after a woman was found with serious injuries inside a clothes store in Liverpool city centre on Tuesday evening.”
A post-mortem examination will be carried out to establish a cause of death.
The spokesman added: “Detectives are speaking to witnesses and viewing CCTV to establish the full circumstances of the incident.”
Five years ago, at the same store, a three-year-old girl fell through a gap between the escalators to the lower ground floor while travelling up to the third floor with her family.
She suffered multiple injuries including a broken leg and arm but survived.
