Cambodia and the UN will miss “the last chance” to try Khmer Rouge leaders for crimes against humanity unless they ratify an agreement to establish a genocide court, the UN legal chief warned.

Cambodia and the UN will miss “the last chance” to try Khmer Rouge leaders for crimes against humanity unless they ratify an agreement to establish a genocide court, the UN legal chief warned.

Under-Secretary-General for legal affairs Hans Corell called for quick ratification of the 17-page agreement creating a UN-assisted tribunal so the aging leaders of the radical communist group that held power from 1975-79 can be tried before they die or become too infirm.

Cambodian Prime Minister Hun Sen said in a radio broadcast that he will seek Cabinet approval of the agreement on Friday and then send it to Parliament for quick ratification.
