Riots as Strasbourg prepares for Nato summit

Police used tear gas to disperse a crowd of 800 to 900 people in Strasbourg tonight as the French city prepared for the arrival of world leaders for the 60th anniversary Nato summit.

Police said the crowd broke up after the tear gas was fired and calm returned to the neighbourhood of Neuhoff, in the south part of the city, which is close to the German border.

The skirmishes between about 40 riot police and small groups of masked protesters flared up sporadically in the fields at the edge of the village.

Demonstrators pelted the officers with rocks and bottles, but there were no immediate reports of injuries.

Police said a dozen protesters were arrested in the melee in Neuhoff.

Tens of thousands of demonstrators have descended on Strasbourg and two south-west German towns.
