Sycerika McMahon has won silver in the 50metres breaststroke at the European Swimming Championships in the Hungarian city of Debrecen - and it was so close to gold.

The 17-year-old came second behind Czech swimmer Petra Clocova by a margin of two-hundredths of a second, in clocking a new Irish record of 31-point-27 seconds.

McMahon has earlier in the week qualified for the Olympics 100 breaststroke.

The 50 breaststroke, in which McMahon has medaled today, is not an Olympic event.
