The pilot of the light aircraft which crashed in Co Down last night has been named locally as Hugh McKnight, a 53-year-old retired police officer.

His two passengers were Steven Annet and Andrew Burden.

All three were from the small seaside village of Annalong in Co Down.

The plane came down in misty conditions in a field near the Kilkeel, just after 9pm last night.

It is believed the three men were returning from watching the TT races on the Isle of Man and were attempting to land on a privately-owned airstrip, just miles from the men's homes.

Air accident investigators will today try to find out what caused the crash.
