Poll finds older people are happier about idea of ageing

Irish people get happier as they spend more time in old age, according to a group that champions independent living for the elderly.

Irish people get happier as they spend more time in old age, according to a group that champions independent living for the elderly.

Rukba Ireland, which has now renamed itself Independent Age, said an opinion poll it commissioned found that just 24% of respondents in their 50s agreed that growing old was better than they imagined.

This figure rose to 52% among respondents in their 70s.

Elsewhere, a majority of respondents to the poll said the Government could do more to assist older people financially, while 42% identified the prospect of ending up in a nursing home as one of their worst fears.

Poor health, disability, and an inability to look after oneself were also found to be of major concern to people over the age of 50.
