Labour TD Liz Mc Manus denies party members are running scared from the position of leader of the party.

Eamonn Gilmore is the only candidate so far to confirm his interest while possible runners Brendan Howlin, Joan Burton and Deputy Mc Manus have all pulled out of the competition.

The closing date for nominations for party leader and deputy leader is next Thursday.

The election will be held on October 4 with the new leadership installed the following day.

Wicklow TD McManus said that they have simply realised Gilmore is the best person for the job.
