The courts are to get new powers to close pubs and nightclubs which are causing late night disturbances.

The Minister for Justice, John O'Donoghue, is also pledging that new legislation will be introduced to deal with those causing trouble on the streets in the small hours.

Minister O'Donoghue says gardai will be given new powers in a crackdown on night-time disorder.

He is insisting that there is also an onus on the owners of pubs and fast food restaurants to ensure that their premises do not contribute to such problems.
