Justice Minister Michael McDowell is reportedly planning to have a national DNA database up and running by early next year.

Justice Minister Michael McDowell is reportedly planning to have a national DNA database up and running by early next year.

Reports this morning said Mr McDowell was due to receive a report from the Law Reform Commission later this year on what safeguards should be built into the system.

He is then reportedly planning to press ahead with the establishment of the database as soon as possible.

The Law Reform Commission has already recommended that the database should contain DNA taken from crime scenes, everyone convicted of a crime and people arrested in connection with serious offences.
