Mayday call sparks major search off south coast

A major search is underway off the south coast for a vessel after rescue services received a mayday.

A major search is underway off the south coast for a vessel after rescue services received a mayday.

Valencia coastguard received the call just before noon, but as yet, the vessel, which is thought to be south of Mizen Head, has not been found.

It is believed the missing ship may be a French fishing trawler.

The Shannon coastguard helicopter, the LE Ciara and local vessels are all assisting in the search.
