The Department of the Environment has approved five-year action plans on social and affordable housing submitted by 17 of Ireland's local authorities.

Officials in all of Ireland's local councils have been asked to draw up such plans as part of efforts to boost the supply of social and affordable housing over the coming years.

The authorities that have not already compiled their proposals are expected to do so in the next few weeks.

The Government has promised to provide €6bn over the next five years to fund the implementation of the plans, which cover the provision of social rented accommodation, the construction of affordable housing and programmes to regenerate the existing stock of council flats and houses.
