The United States is welcoming the promise by Pakistani leader General Musharraf to crackdown on terrorism.

Both the White House and Secretary of State Colin Powell say it is clear Pakistan is standing firm against terrorism and have expressed the hope that remarks by General Musharraf on television will be enough to end his countries crisis with India.

Pakistan has banned five extremist groups, including two which India blames for the attack on its parliament last month that claimed 14 lives.

Secretary of State Powell is expected to visit the region in the next few days as part of continuing efforts to ensure the nuclear powers do not go to war.
