Pakistan’s electoral commission has set the date for a controversial referendum on extending the rule of President Pervez Musharraf for April 30.
Mr Musharraf, a military general, seized power in a bloodless coup three years ago, ousting the democratically elected President Nawaz Sharif.
He announced his plans to hold a referendum on extending his rule during a televised address to the country last week.
These plans have drawn criticism from the country’s political parties because Mr Musharraf had promised to hold democratic elections to restore Pakistan to civil rule.
