An Irish MEP, who has been asked to draw up proposals on air transport, is proposing the establishment of a special ombudsman to oversee the rights of the EU's 370m passengers.
The ombudsman would investigate issues such as cancelled flights and cabin conditions amid growing fears over air rage and deep vein thrombosis.
Munster MEP Gerry Collins said passengers must be given proper protection.
"I believe the EU must bring forward proposals which can guarantee that passengers are fully aware of their legal rights when difficulties arise with their flights. Passengers must have clearly defined rights when events take place such as the cancellation of flights, the delaying of flights and the mislaying of luggage," he said.
