Insurance industry considering appeal against European Court ruling

Insurance industry representatives said today that they are disappointed with a European ruling on gender, and may appeal.

The European Court of Justice says that offering women preferential rates on insurance, because they are less likely to cause road accidents and live longer - breaches gender equality laws.

The ruling means women will pay more for their car and medical insurance, and for their pensions, while men will pay less.

Asked about the prospect of an appeal, Michael Horan of the Irish Insurance Federation responded: "That remains to be seen.

"We're still studying the judgement. One thing that's clear from the judgement is that the effective date of it is December 2012, so there is a lead-in time before we have to implement it."
