Abramovich overjoyed with Chelsea win

New Chelsea owner Roman Abramovich looked like a young boy on Christmas morning as his investment in Chelsea began to pay dividend at Anfield yesterday.

The Russian billionaire bounced around the directors’ box as his expensively assembled team of stars fought out a 2-1 win over Liverpool.

Abramovich leapt up and down after Juan Sebastian Veron put the Blues ahead, clasped his hands over his eyes as Michael Owen equalised and then joyously hugged his wife and all around him as Jimmy Floyd Hasselbaink clinched the win.

“It was so exciting and an incredible experience. I’m very pleased with the performance and the result,” said Abramovich. “I felt it with my heart and loved every moment.

“It was perfect. It was worth all the money I’ve put into this club and I’m so very, very happy.”

His determination to build Chelsea into a force to match Manchester United is expected to see compatriot Alexei Smertin signed from Bordeaux this week.

And if the passion displayed at Anfield on Saturday is anything to go by, he won’t be the last to join Abramovich’s Stamford Bridge revolution.
