A post mortem is being carried out in Johannesburg today on the body of an Irish priest murdered in his South African home at the weekend.

Father Declan Collins, aged 50, was beaten and stabbed in a frenzied attack, during which the killers escaped with just €30.

Father Collins, a native of Baltray in Co Louth, was a member of the Salesian order.

Speaking from Johannesburg this morning, his colleague Father Robert Gore said it appears that the priest may have invited his killers into his home as there was no sign of forced entry.
