Troussier says he's in for Scottish job

Philippe Troussier has claimed he is in the frame to become the next Scotland manager.

Philippe Troussier has claimed he is in the frame to become the next Scotland manager.

The Scottish Football Association has been looking for a successor to Berti Vogts since the German stepped down at the start of the month.

Initially an all-Scot shortlist was drawn up but SFA chief executive David Taylor has since indicated another foreigner was a possibility.

Now Troussier, who was on the shortlist when Vogts was appointed in 2002, has declared he is in the frame.

He told The Daily Mail: “I am on the shortlist, they consider my candidature and they recognise my past.”

The 49-year-old Frenchman has led South Africa and Japan in World Cup finals and insisted it was not too late for Scotland to reach Germany 2006 despite boasting only two points from the first three qualifiers.

He said: “First of all, Scotland have not lost the chance for the next World Cup. My strategy is to finish the qualification, to change the minds of people, to tell them that nothing is finished and that we have to work until we have the last second of the match.”

Walter Smith, Gordon Strachan and caretaker manager Tommy Burns remain homegrown candidates.
