Champions League: Review

Real Madrid’s Champions League hopes are hanging by a thread after Bayer Leverkusen gained a deserved 1-1 draw at the Bernabeu.

Real Madrid’s Champions League hopes are hanging by a thread after Bayer Leverkusen gained a deserved 1-1 draw at the Bernabeu.

Mariano Garcia Remon’s team are now third in Group B and only a victory at Roma in two weeks time will guarantee the Spanish giants a place in the knockout phase.

Leverkusen also have eight points but their better head-to-head record means they hold second place. The Germans host Dynamo Kiev in their final game.

Madrid trailed for much of the contest on Wednesday night after Dimitar Berbatov’s 36th-minute goal.

A second half onslaught finally brought a reward for Madrid – Raul equalising with 20 minutes to go – and only a wonderful penalty save from Hans Jorg Butt denied Luis Figo a late winner.

Kiev are top of the section with 10 points after a 2-0 win against Roma in wintry conditions in the Ukraine.

The depleted Italians, who are now out of Europe, contained the hosts for 73 minutes before Traianos Dellas headed into his own net and substitute Maksim Shatskikh tapped home a late second.

Juventus continued their remarkable record of winning every group game 1-0 with another close victory – this time against Ajax in Turin.

Marcelo Zalayeta scored the only goal after 15 minutes in front of another sparse crowd at the Delle Alpi.

Ajax’s defeat meant Bayern Munich would advance if they overcame Maccabi Tel-Aviv in Munich.

They duly obliged, thanks largely to a wonderful first-half display which allowed Felix Magath’s men to go in at the break 3-0 up.

Claudio Pizarro, Hasan Salihamidzic and Torsten Frings all scored as the Bavarians ran riot at the Olympiastadion in the opening 45 minutes.

Barukh Dego pulled one back from the penalty spot but Bayern simply upped the tempo and a Roy Makaay double completed a resounding 5-1 victory.

The UEFA Cup spot in Group C is still wide open with Ajax and Maccabi locked on three points.

Olympiacos and Monaco are favourites to go through from Group A after wins over Deportivo La Coruna and Liverpool respectively.

Predrag Djordjevic netted after 68 minutes for the Greeks while on-loan Argentinian Javier Saviola was the match-winner in Monte Carlo.

Olympiacos lead the section with 10 points with Monaco one point behind.

Third-placed Liverpool can still qualify but they must beat Olympiacos by at least two goals at Anfield on December 8.

Deportivo are sure to finish bottom.

Alex Ferguson’s 1000th game in charge of Manchester United ended in celebration as the Red Devils saw off already-qualified Lyon 2-1 at Old Trafford to make sure of their place in the next stage.

Gary Neville opened the scoring with a rare goal only for a Roy Carroll blunder to gift Mahamadou Diarra an equaliser.

The prolific Ruud van Nistelrooy settled matters with a second-half header - his 36th goal in 37 Champions League games for United.

The other match in Group D saw Fenerbahce clinch the UEFA Cup spot with a 1-0 win at Sparta Prague – a Radoslav Kovac own goal settling the contest in the 20th minute.
