Opposition parties have called on the Government to react quickly to the reports that a batch of tainted heroin has made it onto streets in Ireland.

The Labour party says that it is imperative that drug users are alerted to the possibility that they could be injecting themselves with contaminated heroin.

A supply of infected heroin claimed the lives of eight Irish drug users last year.

Labour TD Mary Upton has insisted that the Government must do all it can to prevent more deaths caused by the drug.

Deputy Upton has urged the Government to use all the knowledge they gained during the crisis last year to avert a new crisis.
