Gardai today released a photograph of a man whose body was discovered in a suitcase in a canal two weeks ago, together with items of his clothing.

Despite extensive inquiries detectives have failed to identify the man, whose body was found in the Royal Canal in Dublin.

Officers have contacted Interpol for assistance amid speculation that he might have been a foreign national.

A Garda spokesman said: "We are showing items of clothing and displaying photos of the dead man’s face. It may be difficult to identify him from the photo as his face is all puffed up and bloated and makes him look overweight.

"We have taken this unusual step as extensive inquiries have failed to give any indication of the man’s identity."

The discovery was made by two teenage boys, who found the black nylon suitcase containing the body in Dublin’s Royal Canal, near Croke Park.

A post mortem examination showed that the man died of head injuries.

He was described as white, 5ft 10ins tall, about 12 stone in weight, and aged between 25 and 40.

He had short, brown, wavy hair and was wearing a tan-coloured leather jacket, a black V-necked top, beige corduroy jeans and blue boxer shorts.

A small light brown and blue "worry stone" was also found on the body.

It is not known how long the body had been there.

But a number of football fans attending matches at Croke Park on July 15 reported having seen a suitcase in the canal five days before the corpse was found.
