Ibrahim Halawa in 'reasonable spirits' in Egyptian jail

The Chairperson of the Foreign Affairs Committee says it is unlikely Ibrahim Halawa will be released before his case goes to trial in Egypt.

Pat Breen met with the 19-year-old in jail yesterday and says Ibrahim is in "reasonable spirits".

He has now been in prison in Egypt for two years after being arrested in Cairo during protests.

His family has criticised the Government's handling of the situation, but Deputy Breen says it is being treated delicately.

He said: Well, we're all very anxious that he come home to his family and he continues his education, he's very interested in medicine.

"It's highly unlikely that he will be released at any stage before his court appearance.

"The situation here is that most prisoners that are released before court appearances are being charged and convicted before a presidential bargain can come into place."
