The sole female occupant of the car remains unaccounted for. Navy divers are now on the way to the scene.

Eyewitnesses say the black car entered the water at Kennedy Quay, close to Cork City Hall, at around 4.50pm.

The car briefly stayed on the surface of the water, but quickly sank before a nearby tug could come to its rescue.

Emergency services remain on the Quayside, awaiting the arrival of naval divers from Haulbowline.
