Leeds are waiting on the result of talks between want-away midfielder Lee Bowyer and new boss Terry Venables.
The transfer-listed 25-year-old returned to pre-season training amid rumours that he could be on his way to Liverpool.
Bowyer's Elland Road future remains in doubt after his refusal to sign a lucrative new contract.
Chairman Peter Ridsdale admits that if Bowyer tells Venables he remains intent on leaving, the Yorkshire club will give interested clubs permission to begin negotiations with Bowyer.
Ridsdale told the Yorkshire Post: "If Lee tells Terry that he is still intent on not signing a new contract - and bearing in mind that he only has one year remaining - we will contact anyone who has made an acceptable offer and give them permission to speak to the player."
Liverpool have expressed an interest in the midfielder and Leeds would been keen to cash in on Bowyer now rather than see him become a free agent in 12 months' time.
