Pop king Robbie Williams is planning to ‘‘kill off’’ the image which has made him one of Britain’s best loved entertainers and re-invent himself, the star has revealed.

The singer, adored by millions, said he would also be adopting a new style of music when he launches the new Robbie later in the year.

Speaking to Radio One before performing in front of 60,000 people at the Roskilde Festival in Denmark at the weekend, he said he needed to find out who he was.

The former Take That man said he needed to take some time out to try to remember why he was still involved in the music business.

He said: ‘‘I’m really bored with Robbie. So yeah, there will be a new style of music hopefully. After November I’m just gonna kill him off. I’m everywhere. It must be really boring for people.’’

Williams, who begins his UK tour later this month, also told of his fear of performing live.

‘‘I find doing gigs really traumatic and it’s a struggle to get through most of them. Each day comes and each day goes and they all seem really blurred.’’

Williams said he did not want to give up the music industry but did want to take some time off.

‘‘I’ve got to go away. I really have. I need to go off and take a year off. Because I need to take time off to get my confidence back and I just need to take time off to find out who the hell I am.

‘‘I genuinely do because I don’t know anymore. There was a point to me doing all this but I’ve forgotten what it was. I’ve gone further than I could possibly dream. I’m just baffled. I don’t know why I’m here, why people buy the records, why people enjoy the show, but they do. I need to believe in that.’’
