Horeswood 3-11 St. Anne's 1-15
Horeswood claimed the Wexford SFC title for the third time in five years courtesy of a 3-11 to 1-15 win over St. Anne's at Wexford Park this afternoon.
In one of the most tightly-contested Wexford deciders in recent years, Horeswood staged a tremendous comeback after going 1-3 to 0-0 behind in the opening stages.
Wexford star PJ Banville was one of those central to this Horeswood triumph. He finished with a personal haul of seven points, including his side's final score.
St. Anne's did make the brighter start, with a great injection of pace to their play in the opening stages.
Redmond Barry was central to this early charge. He was involved in all of their early scores, with Jonathan Fogarty netting a fourth minute goal and Barry firing over two points to ensure a six-point cushion.
Responding quickly, Horeswood sprung to life with scores from Declan Murphy, Stephen Collins and Banville to cut the deficit.
Goals flowed freely also with Jim Wall completing a Horeswood first half hat-trick to ensure a 3-7 to 1-6 half-time lead.
St. Anne's bounced back by scoring three of the first four points after the interval to reduce the arrears to six points.
However, Horeswood continued to hold that extra edge and Barry was inches away from registering an injury-time goal.
After the game, Horeswood captain Thomas Howlin gleefully accepted the cup on behalf of his team.
