An Australian woman was shot in the stomach as she sunbathed at a hotel on the Indonesian island of Bali, police said today.

The shooting of 48-year-old Maree Lyn Savage triggered panic among tourists yesterday morning in the beach area of Bali known as Kuta.

But police said it was most likely an accident and said Savage would live.

Police have interviewed scores of witnesses including Savage’s husband, who was with her at the time. But the shooting remains a mystery, they said.

‘‘No one heard the gunshot so that makes it difficult to disclose the incident,’’ Kuta Police Captain Muhammad Anwar said. ‘‘We are still investigating, and it is too early to say anything about a suspect.’’

Savage and her husband James were sunbathing at the Kuta Beach Hotel when they both heard a thud, police said.

Maree Savage noticed blood on her swimsuit and realised she had been shot.

James Savage rushed her to the Bali International Medical Centre. She was treated and released a few hours later, hospital officials said.
