Woodward looks to the future

England stars Jonny Wilkinson and Jason Robinson both face several weeks on the sidelines following Saturday’s brutal clash with South Africa – but England coach Clive Woodward today insisted he wants to put the ugly affair behind him.

Woodward, who will not be looking for England to cite any individuals, said: “There was a lot going on, possibly on both sides, but I have looked at the tape and I have got to draw a line under it. It’s history now.”

Wilkinson, who damaged his shoulder, and Robinson, who suffered a perforated ear drum, are seeing specialists today and Woodward added: “They will both be out for a few weeks.”

He branded England’s 53-3 victory at Twickenham as “not a great advert for rugby” but insisted he must now look ahead, starting with the opening match in the Six Nations against France in February.

England completed a clean sweep of the major southern hemisphere rugby nations, beating New Zealand, Australia and South Africa on successive Saturday’s and Woodward said: “It’s been a good three weeks. We wanted to win all three games and we have moved forward.”

Next year’s World Cup in Australia is the big target but Woodward maintained: “I don’t see these games as preparation for the World Cup.

“It’s all about winning Test matches on the day, not about the future, and that’s what I will be concentrating on for the next 12 months.

“France is a game we want to win. They are the only team to beat us this year and it’s going to be a great Test match.”

England are now number one in the Zurich world rankings but Woodward, who praised the top clubs for their co-operation in releasing players for the additional training days he secured at the start of this season, added: “It’s a source of satisfaction.

“It means we are doing a lot of things right but in reality from my point of view the number one team in the world is Australia because they hold the World Cup.

“That’s the only time you can hold your hands up and say you are the number one and England have never been near that situation.

“I think Australia are the team to beat. They are the holders, they are playing in their own country and they have some excellent players.”
