Italian police say they have arrested 38 suspects in a sweep against the ’Ndrangheta syndicate, which has allegedly been involved in murders, extortion and drugs and arms trafficking.

Three suspects are still being sought after the morning raids conducted across Italy and focusing on the southern Calabria region, where the powerful gang is based.

Police in the Calabrian city of Crotone say today’s operation has crippled a clan that terrorised businesses in the area with attacks and firebombings if they refused to pay protection money. Police have uncovered three arms stashes, including AK-47s and explosives.
