Brown: Iranians deserve democracy

Iran’s leaders have “serious questions” to answer over the disputed presidential election, British Prime Minister Gordon Brown said today amid growing protests in Tehran.

As tens of thousands joined demonstrations against the declared landslide re-election of Mahmoud Ahmadinejad, Mr Brown said Iran’s people “deserve democracy”.

And he warned that the way supporters of pro-reform leader Mir Hossein Mousavi were treated had implications for Iran’s relations with the international community.

“Iran is an independent nation that deserves our respect, and the Iranian people a proud people who deserve democracy,” Mr Brown declared during a Commons statement on Iraq.

“That is why the regime must address the serious questions which have been asked about the conduct of the elections.

“The way the regime responds to legitimate protests will have implications for Iran’s relationship with the rest of the world.”
