Voting is underway in the local and European elections and the citizenship referendum.

Polls opened throughout the country at 7am and are not due to close until 9pm.

Last night, Taoiseach Bertie Ahern issued a last-minute appeal for voters to come and out and cast their ballots, saying democracy required participation and involvement from the people.

The results of the local elections and the citizenship referendum should be known by late tomorrow, while the European elections results are due to be announced on Sunday.
