Michael D Higgins has said he will decide whether to run for President if and when he is asked by the Labour party.

The Galway West TD was reacting to a newspaper interview with his party leader Pat Rabbitte today, saying Higgins is his preferred choice to run for the race on a Labour ticket.

Mr Rabbitte said Labour would decide whether or not to field a candidate after the local and European elections in the summer.

Deputy Higgins said the President's office should engage more with the needs of its citizens.
