Esat has announced that it has unbundled the local loop at an exchange in Limerick.
By December the company plans to have unbundled exchanges throughout Ireland.
After Limerick the next one will be Ballina, followed by Cork, Clonmel, Carlow, Kilkenny, Tralee, Athlone and Sligo.
The company is still in negotiation to unbundle the 40 Dublin exchanges.
It is a providing customers with a DSL, digital subscriber line, to provide a dedicated circuit between the customer and a telephone exchange.
This allows for high-sped data transfer over existing copper telephone lines, creating always-on internet access.
Customers can choose from a range of DSL products, the fastest being a 2 Meg/256k Asymmetrical service.
The cost of this is a quarterly subscription rental of €1200 and a once off connection fee of €1500. Other cheaper services are a 512K/256K asymmetrical service and a 1 Meg/256K service.
Esat is also planning to provide SDSL, symmetrical digital subscriber line, to customers over the next few months
