North: Rioters face tough measures

The British Government has pledged to press ahead with new plans to speed up the prosecution of rioters.

The British Government has pledged to press ahead with new plans to speed up the prosecution of rioters.

The move came as the North's new chief constable Hugh Orde vowed to hunt down the gunmen involved in hit-and-run murders.

The Northern Secretary, John Reid, says his officials intend to take a new look at the courts' effectiveness against rioters.

In a tough message to paramilitaries, the new chief constable, Hugh Orde, said they were in effect serial killers and the police had to be better organised and smarter than they are.

He plans to draft in 50 experienced detectives to resolve outstanding loyalist and republican killings.

In east Belfast, people have enjoyed their fifth successive night of relative calm after the police changed tactics and swamped the area with patrols.
