Trimble denies quit claims
David Trimble today denied reports that he is planning to quit as Ulster Unionist Party leader.
A spokesman for the former Northern Ireland First Minister described the claims as ‘‘utter nonsense’’.
A Sunday newspaper reported that Mr Trimble had told friends he would not lead the party into the next Westminster election and may even stand down before the next meeting of his party council in March.
His spokesman said: ‘‘He wants to totally refute these claims. There is no basis whatsoever for the story.’’
He added: ‘‘David Trimble certainly intends to be the leader of the party until the party decides.
‘‘David put himself forward in June for the post of leader and was re-elected unanimously. He will continue to serve until the democratic structures of the party so decide.’’
