The head of the decommissioning body is expected to arrive in Ireland today, fuelling speculation that the Provisional IRA is on the verge of completing the destruction of its arsenal.

The organisation promised to complete the decommissioning process earlier this year after it announced that its armed struggle was over.

It also promised to allow two independent observers from the Catholic and Protestant churches to witness the process.

Canadian General John de Chastelain's arrival today will fuel speculation that these promises are about to be honoured, though no news is likely to emerge until the destruction of arms has been completed.
