Former Esat boss Denis O’Brien has taken the stand at the Moriarty Tribunal and is denying making a $50,000 donation to Fine Gael in 1995.

Mr O’Brien says it would have been wrong to make such a donation in such close proximity to the awarding of the second mobile phone licence to Esat Digifone.

He is contradicting the evidence of his former partner, and head of Norwegian state telephone company Telenor, Arve Johansen.

Mr Johansen said he had trusted O’Brien’s judgement but would not have made the donation if he had known the strange way it was made.
