Dettori up against it in Germany

Frankie Dettori looks to have a fairly remote chance of a first European Classic success this year aboard Bermuda Reef in Sunday’s Deutsches Derby with his trainer Peter Schiergen fielding two more strongly fancied stablemates.

Bermuda Reef is a 54-1 shot in the ante-post market of German firm Racebets, whereas Lucky Speed trades at 8-1 and Empoli 14s behind the hot favourite Ivanhowe.

Dettori’s mount has had a busy spring without winning, running a good race in third behind Lucky Speed (Andrasch Starke) in the Bavarian Classic at Munich but then flopping in a Listed event at Bremen.

Krefeld winner Empoli (Eduardo Pedroza) was second to the impressive Ivanhowe in the Union-Rennen at Cologne, a major Derby trial.

Schiergen, trainer of three domestic Derby winners before as well as of the outstanding filly Danedream, said: “Lucky Speed is my number one horse, he’s got the form, and Empoli would be my second horse, he ran quite well last time but I’m not very happy about the draw for him.

“Bermuda Reef ran well in Munich but the last run was not so good. I don’t know why, maybe because it was his first run on a right-handed track. Hopefully he can do better this time.”
